A terminology server is software that manages and provides access to clinical terminologies. Capturing patient data using standardised terminologies reduces ambiguity and makes data easier to share and understand by different systems. Ontoserver is a terminology server that implements the FHIR standard and is freely available in Australia. It can be used to build user interfaces that implement modern, auto-complete search functionality and can also connect to the National Clinical Terminology Service (NCTS) to keep terminologies up to date.

A free web browser that allows exploring a public Ontoserver instance can be found here.

Ontoserver is a terminology server developed by CSIRO’s Australian e-Health Research Centre that implements the FHIR standard and is freely available in Australia.
