Legalising Mitochondrial Donation in Australia

Home Our publications Legalising Mitochondrial Donation in…

The Australian Government has engaged experts and the public in all stages of consultation on the process of legalising mitochondrial donation in Australia. Mitochondrial donation represents an opportunity for women who would normally be unable to have a healthy child to do so. First, government undertook a consultation on the ethical issues relating to the technique, then on the public consultation paper, and finally on the proposed legislative changes that will need to be passed to allow the technology to be performed in Australia. Australian Genomics’ submissions provide support for the measured, regulated and phased introduction of mitochondrial donation technologies.
