Position statement: use of genomic information in life insurance and related policies

Home All news & events News Position statement: use of genomic…

Australian Genomics has updated its position statement on the use of genomic information in life insurance and related policies.

This update takes into account the introduction of an industry-led Moratorium on the use of genomic data in life insurance which came into effect on 1 July 2019.

The position statement continues to advocate for a nationally-consistent approach to the use of genomic information by the insurance industry, one that ensures those undertaking clinical testing and/or participating in research are not subject to inappropriate discrimination in life insurance and related policies.

“We believe the Australian Government should take a leadership role in regulating the use of genomic information by the insurance industry and implement an interim moratorium on the use of genetic test results,” the statement says.

The position statement was prepared by Andrea Belcher, Tiffany Boughtwood, Merryn Pearce and Ainsley Newson on behalf of Australian Genomics. This position statement was reviewed by Australian Genomics’ National Implementation Committee, Community Advisory Group, Independent Advisory Board and approved by the National Steering Committee in November 2018. The July 2019 update has been approved for publication by the Australian Genomics Executive.
