Join Australian Genomics’ DNA dialogue seminar, “Mexican biobank advances population and medical genomics of diverse ancestries”, featuring A/Prof Mashaal Sohail from the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

Latin America continues to be severely underrepresented in genomics research, and fine-scale genetic histories and complex trait architectures remain hidden owing to insufficient data. To fill this gap, the Mexican Biobank project genotyped 6,057 individuals from 898 rural and urban localities across all 32 states in Mexico at a resolution of 1.8 million genome-wide markers with linked complex trait and disease information creating a valuable nationwide genotype–phenotype database. This study provides insights into the genetic histories of individuals in Mexico and dissects their complex trait architectures, both crucial for making precision and preventive medicine initiatives accessible worldwide.

About the speaker

Mashaal Sohail is an Associate Professor at the Center for Genomic Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. She completed her post-doctoral training at the University of Chicago with Dr John Novembre, and at Langebio-Cinvestav with Dr Andres Moreno Estrada. She completed her PhD in Systems Biology (in the lab of Dr Shamil Sunyaev) and her AM in History of Science, both at Harvard University. Her lab focuses on population and complex trait genomics, with an interest in underserved groups from Mexico and Pakistan.

About DNA dialogue

With the wealth of genomic expertise internationally, this seminar series is a forum for members of the genomics community in Australia and beyond to learn of new developments in health genomics, and the overseas experience.

The topics are diverse, including data sharing, ethics, carrier screening, cancer genomics, genomics in emerging health systems, and more.

DNA dialogue seminars are held live via zoom and registration is open to anyone working in, or impacted by, medical genomics. You can register for this event here and we encourage you to spread the word about this series.
