Genomics research relies on a broad community of collaborators. Now members of those communities can have their say in shaping that research and how projects are developed.
An Australian Genomics project has developed draft guidelines for community involvement in research and is seeking feedback on the guidelines by May 26 to ensure they are “fit for purpose”.
Researchers, community members, clinicians, patients, advocacy groups, peak bodies and others are invited to comment before a final report is developed later this year.
The Guidelines for Community Involvement in Genomics Research are a key outcome of the Involve Australia project, which seeks to provide genomic researchers with a blueprint for “effective and meaningful” involvement of community members.
This means involving community members at all stages of a research project from design and terminology to research priorities, policies and practices that affect the outcomes of that research.
“Involve Australia’s vision is that responsible community involvement practices are standardised and incorporated into every part of genomics research,” the report says.
